EP 42: travel, weddings, and gear upgrades: a solo update from summer grace
Hey everyone, welcome back to Summer School! It's Summer Grace here with a rare solo episode. I usually have guests, but I wanted to take some time to give you all a personal update. So, let's dive in!
Traveling Adventures and Wedding Madness
We've been on the road a lot lately, starting our trip around July 7th. Our first stop was Hood River, where we shot two weddings that were both two-day packages. It was intense, especially being pregnant! The main wedding days were 12 to 13 hours each. After that, we headed to Jake’s family and had an insane engagement session in Seattle that lasted until 1 AM. It was crazy but so much fun!
Gear Upgrades in Seattle
While in Seattle, we upgraded our gear. We visited Glazer's, my favorite camera store, and got to touch the new Canon R5 Mark II that had just been released. The viewfinder is massive, similar to the R3, which is exciting. The most mind-blowing feature is the ability to calibrate the viewfinder to your eyeball, allowing the camera to focus on whatever you're looking at. It's like something out of a sci-fi movie! We also upgraded to the R6 Mark II and got the new 35mm 1.4 RF lens. The autofocus on the R6 Mark II is a huge improvement, and I'm super happy with how it performed during a low-light engagement session.
Our Current Setup
Our current setup includes the R5 for me and the R6 Mark II for Jake. We've had the R5 since its launch, and it's been so good for weddings. The R6 was starting to show its age, especially with autofocus, so the upgrade was necessary. We also kept our EF 85mm lens because it has a unique feel that we love. Additionally, we traded in our 16-35mm lens for a new 16mm pancake lens, which is perfect for capturing wide-angle shots at receptions.
Conclusion
I'm excited to see how these upgrades will improve our workflow and the quality of our photos. If you're ever in Seattle, definitely check out Glazer's. And if you're considering new gear, I highly recommend looking into the R5 Mark II and R6 Mark II. Stay tuned for more updates on our travels and gear!
